For thousands of years Ruby has been the most valued gemstone. Ruby is considered to be one of the most precious of the twelve stones and it is also called the ”lord of gems” and was placed on Aaron’s neck by God’s command. The bible says that wisdom is “more precious than rubies,” that is to say very valuable indeed. In the ancient language of Sanskrit, ruby is called ratnaraj, or “king of precious stones” and ratnanayaka, “leader of precious stones.”

Corundum is usually not mentioned, When someone talks about the most famous gemstones such as diamond, topaz, aquamarine, emerald and garnet. The two varieties that are sure to be on any list of gemstones. The red variety of corundum is known as ruby and all the other colors of corundum are known as sapphire.

Corundum is supposed to be the second hardest natural mineral and the hardest mineral, diamond is yet four times harder than corundum. The hardness of corundum can be partially attributed to the strong and short oxygen-aluminum bonds. These bonds pull the oxygen and aluminum atoms close together, making the crystal not only hard but also quite dense for a mineral made up of two relatively light elements.

Another famous variety of mineral beryl is Aquamarine, the blue-green or aqua variety of the mineral beryl. Other gemstone color varieties that belong to beryl include emerald, morganite, and heliodor. Other colors of beryl are simply refered to by their color, such as red beryl.

Aquamarine is colored because of the trace amounts of iron that are embedded into the crystal structure. Mostly gem aquamarines are heat treated to produce the popular blue-green colors from less desirable yellow or pale stones. Brazil is the leading producer of aquamarines, which has many mines. Pakistan, as well as many U.S. localities, produces wonderful specimens as well.

The green variety of the mineral beryl is popularily know as Emerald. Other gemstone color varieties that belong to beryl include aquamarine, morganite, and heliodor. Other colors of beryl are simply refered to by their color, such as red beryl.

The worth of the wonderful green color of emerald is unparalleled. Emerald’s precious green color is due to a mixture of small amounts of chromium and enhanced by traces of iron. Unlike other beryls, emeralds contain inclusions and other flaws, although these flaws are not looked on as negative aspects for emerald like they would be for other gemstones. Indeed, these flaws are considered part of the character of the stone and are used to assure the purchaser of a natural stone.

The fossils that are encased in amber probably got there when they flew or crawled on to the fresh seeping sap and then got stuck. The sap oozed over the trapped animals and perhaps fell to the ground and was later covered by dirt and debris. The sap later hardened and became a fossil.
